The p.e.a.c.h. Plants CSA
So, you might be wondering: What is the p.e.a.c.h. Plants CSA? Fair question.
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. CSA is commonly a model by which a family receives a weekly box of locallygrown, farm-fresh produce in exchange for paying the farmer in advance for the seasons subscription. The p.e.a.c.h. Plants CSA is similar, but instead of the farmer growing the produce, YOU DO! Now, how fun is that?
Here's how it works. In the spring, right about April 15th, the p.e.a.c.h. Community Farm will have a flat of plant starts ready for you that we have lovingly grown, organically, from seed. You can pick up your starts at Fresh Abundance Local and Organic Foods store on Division St. Then you can take them home, plant them and, voila, instant garden.
Thats not all! Your first flat of starts will consist of things like lettuce, broccoli, peas and onions; cool weather crops. Later, around May 25th, well have more plants for you— warm weather varieties like tomatoes, beans and basil. Yum! And some more lettuces (since by then youll have devoured the lettuce you grew earlier).
Hold on, we're not done yet! Did you know that in August you can plant more cool weather transplants for a fall harvest? Yup, indeed. Most folks dont think about planting seeds in mid-summer for fall crops, but hey! Were farmers. This is what we do. And you benefit since around August 10, guess what? Right! More plants from your p.e.a.c.h. Plants CSA. Youre going to be eating well in 2010, no doubt about it.
What does the p.e.a.c.h. Plants CSA cost?
We offer some choices. The basic CSA is one standard flat of mixed varieties, three times a season and we choose the varieties. Thats $125 per share per season for approximately 45 plants in each flat (depends on the actual variety mix). If you would like to make up your own variety mix, thats $145 per share per season. Of course, if you have a large garden and want to plant more, you can purchase more than one p.e.a.c.h. Plant CSA share. Research indicates that you can reap a harvest worth 4 times your initial investment compared to produce prices you would pay at a store. CSA members get a 20% discount if you buy any additional plants at our farm stands or by special order.
You and your family will eat well and your Community Farmers will be able to grow for another season. That's sustainable agriculture. As an added bonus, the p.e.a.c.h. Community Farm is a non-profit service organization dedicated to making low-cost, farm-fresh foods accessible to Spokane Countys low-income residents. The money that paid for your Gift CSA helps fund this effort. Cool, huh?
